Reflecting on the Cross as a Symbol of Faith

By Dr. Mrs. Bibiana A. Acholonu

Faith is bailing out a friend. “But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Proverbs 18:24. For our Lord Jesus Christ, “bailing out a friend” means nothing but dying for you and me on the cross.  Christ died upon the cross of Calvary to save us from all our sins and guilts. What a great faith that is? It is beyond our imagination. In fact, he ran the risk of giving everything he had, including his life to save his friends, who might not appreciate it. What lesson can we his creatures learn from this unimaginable sacrifice? Can we bailout our friends in time of difficulties without grumbling or expecting reward or pay back? Being human, sometimes we lack the skill of making such expensive sacrifice to our fellow human beings like Christ did for us. We can be our brother’s keeper with God’s grace which we can receive with ultimate faith in the might power of God.

We are lucky because we have a great mother Mary who intercedes for us to obtain abondance grace to increase our faith. Mary always points us to God, reminding us of God's infinite goodness. She helps us to open our hearts to God's ways, wherever those may lead us. Honored under the title of “Queen of Peace,” Mary encourages us to cooperate with Jesus in building a peace based on justice, a peace that respects the fundamental human rights, including religious rights.

At the end of the day we plea for the cross. Cross is the born of our salvation. Sigmatism of some Saints was designed to show us the value of the cross. From suffering we can turn it with act of love to our friends and enemies.  Sometimes we can be overwhelming with sufferings, but we unite our sufferings with the cross of Christ for healing.  We derived the joy and blessings from the cross of Christ. In the church we cover ourselves with cross and that’s why we have crosses everywhere.

No human being who has received God's word are being exempted from difficulties, trials, and tribulations. However, when affliction comes, the true Christian does not become restless, distrustful, or despondent. Even though we cannot see the definite outcome of affairs, or distinguish the purpose of God's providences, we are not to cast away our confidence. We must not despair because God promise is that we are an heir to his inheritance.  His graces are well enough for us. Since he promised, he will give.  Even when we sin, he still forgives us because he loves us. We must refrain from hiding from God because of our sin which he had paid the price with his crucifixion on the cross.

Rather let us pick courage when we feel overwhelmed with trials and tribulations, to joyfully reflect on the life of Christ who went through the same sufferings and overcame it with faithfulness. Remembering the tender mercies of the Lord, we should cast our care upon him, and with patience wait for his salvation. Let us have faith in his promise and believe as St Paul said in the Bible that the good work the Lord had started in our lives, he will bring them into accomplishments in Jesus Name.
